Note: The tickets from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to the research station (UFS) where the meeting takes place are included in the conference fee. For logistical reasons, we recommend booking a hotel close to the central station in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, since the trains to the UFS leave nearby and the conference dinner will be closeby. Hotel recommendations can be found on this site.
Day 1 (Jun 23)
On day 1 of the conference, we have arranged for a special train that will take us directly from the "Zugspitzbahn" station in Garmisch-Partenkirchen to the research station (UFS) where our meeting will take place.
The group train to the research station departs on Monday, June 23 at 07:39 a.m. from the Zugspitzbahn station in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
Please note: this is not the central train station, but the separate Zugspitzbahnhof, located right next door. You can find its location here: Zugspitzbahnhof on the map.
Make sure to arrive at the Zugspitzbahnhof no later than 07:25 to allow for smooth boarding.
If you miss the special train in the morning you need to buy a seperate ticket and follow the instructions for Day 2 to get to the UFS, please also contact the LOC if this happens.
For the return trip on day 1 we have also arranged for a special train to take us back directly from the UFS to Garmisch-Partenkirchen where we will have a conference dinner starting at 7:00 p.m. The train will leave at 5:00 p.m. at the UFS and will arrive in Garmisch-Partenkirchen at 6:15 p.m.
Note: If you are not staying in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, but close to another stop of the "Zugspitzbahn" we can arrange for the train to pick you up at another stop (e.g. "Grainau"), but please inform the LOC about it beforehand.
Day 2 (Jun 24)
On day 2 there will not be a special train, that means the fastest way to the UFS is by taking the cable car. You will receive tickets for the trip on day 1 from the LOC members.
In the morning, please take the regular train at 8:15 a.m. until the stop "Eibsee". Get off the train and walk to the cable car "Seilbahn Zugspitze". Please take the cable car up to the top and directly proceed to the next cable car called "Gletscherbahn" which will take you to the "Zugspitzplatt" plateau area (there will be an opportunity to take pictures at the summit in the afternoon). Once you arrive at the "Zugspitzplatt" station there will be an LOC member guiding you to the cable car of the research station which will ultimately take you to the meeting. Please note that the cable car of the research station has a capacity of only 8 persons, so there might be some waiting time before you can board.
To summarize:
If you miss the train in the morning, please contact the LOC as soon as possible. You do not need to buy a new ticket, but please use your ticket to take the following train leaving Garmisch-Partenkirchen at 9:15 a.m. and get off at the final stop ("Zugspitzplatt"). If this happens, please contact the LOC to pick you up there and guide you to the cable car to reach the research station.
Return Trip
For the return trip on day 2, everybody first needs to take the cable car back from the UFS to Zugspitzplatt, which will take ~45 minutes, due to the limited capacity of only 8 persons.
From Zugspitzplatt there are two options:
- Take the train (Zugspitzbahn/BZB) from Zugspitzplatt directly back to Garmisch-Partenkirchen (departing at 15:30 and 16:30, arrival 16:50 and 17:50, respectively)
- Do the same as in the morning in reverse order (Zugspitzplatt -> Zugspitze summit -> Eibsee -> Garmisch-Partenkirchen, arrival in Garmisch-Partenkirchen also between 16:50 and 17:50)
Important: The last train from Zugspitzplatt leaves at 16:30 and the last cable car at 16:25! If you miss them there will be no possibility to get you down the mountain!
