Self-guided Tour to Zugspitzplatt and guided Glacier and Climate Excursion as a hike to the Schneeferner glacier (April 16th, 2026, parallel to the Analysis Workshop)
Originally, we planned to offer all people attending the IVS General Meeting but have no chance to particpiate in the Analysis Workshop on the Zugspitze mountain a chance to go on a summit tour. But we got the information that the Zugspitzbahn cable cars are under maintenance during the week of the workshop (see here). Trains are not affected by the maintenance.
We put in a lot of effort to find a suitable replacement and can now offer something extraordinary: you can start a guided hike to the Schneeferner glacier. Veronika Mangold from VIVALPIN GmbH & Co. KG will take you on a Glacier and Climate Excursion. This is a special experience which you cannot easily book as a single tourist at this time of the year.
You will get vouchers and a round-trip-ticket so that you can go to and back from the Zugspitzplatt. Due to the special location we had to charge some extra, small fee for this tour. Now we're also including the glacier experience as a bonus. You will never forget the special scenic views and experiences.
To ensure a smooth process, we are planning the following procedure. We were able to hire a complete special train of the cog railway from the Zugspitzbahn for the Analysis Workshop. Therefore, we can offer a ride with the same train which will depart at 7:39 a.m. at train station of the Zugspitzbahn at Garmisch-Partenkirchen (attention: train station of the Zugspitzbahn, not the regular railway station). The train brings us directly to the Research Station Schneefernerhaus within about 1.5 hours. After a short stay, you can use the UFS Cable Car to go down to Zugspitzplatt.

After arrival, you will have free time to explore the area around the train station Zugspitzplatt. You can also have a self-organized lunch there, e.g at Gletscher 2600 or at the Glacier Restaurant Sonnalpin.
The Glacier and Climate Excursion will then start at 12:00 o'clock from the train station Zugspitzplatt. The tour will last about 2 hours.
Attention: Please be prepared for snow and corresponding temperatures, as well as stronger UV radiation. Therefore, choose appropriate wind- and water-proofed clothing, wool hat and gloves, hiking boots, sunscreen, and sunglasses.
If you don't want to join the tour, please inform the LOC about and you can just use the round-trip ticket to go down again with the train from Zugspitzplatt.
After the tour, you can independently take the trains from Zugspitzplatt down to the valley. Please organize this completely on your own needs using the timetable from the Zugspitzbahn. Please be aware that there are some deadlines for a save return shortly before the service ends every day.

If you go down earlier, we also suggest to make a short stop-over at the beautiful Eibsee and take a later train to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. But please be aware of the end of the service every day.
